Probabilistic vs. Deterministic Consensus

These systems rely on statistical confidence: the longer a block remains on the chain without being replaced, the more likely it is to stay. But critically, there are no guarantees.

Validator Accountability

Zug introduces a simpler, more elegant protocol design, replacing the more complex voting and messaging mechanics of Highway. It reduces communication overhead between validators and minimizes the amount of consensus-related state each node must manage. This lightness is more than a technical improvement—it’s a leap toward greater sustainability and broader validator participation.

Under Highway, the network’s performance could be dragged down by a single weak link. With Zug, responsibility is isolated:  each validator is now scored per block, based on their individual activity. If a validator underperforms, that’s their problem, not the network’s.

Previously, validators were judged collectively. A single bad actor—even a minor technical hiccup—could penalize the entire validator set. Now, performance is personal. Each validator is accountable for their own uptime, participation, and signature activity. This shift not only improves fairness but also network stability and reliability.
